Present perfect or past perfect?

Please check the sentence below.

"They told me that they hadn't eaten such kind of food before."

Someone said that we can use present perfect tense for the clause after "that". To my knowlege, in a reported speech, when the reporting verb in the past form, the tense after the reporting verb can't be "present" so we can't use present perfect in this sentence.

Is that correct?
