Present perfect is better?

Once I (have decided/ decide) to do something, I never give (it) up.

1) Which tense should I choose? Are both choices correct?
2) Should I use “it”? Or is it more common to write without it?

All four permutations are possible. I would probably say it thus: Once I've decided to do something, I never give up. But the other ways of saying it are fine, too.
