Present perfect always from present perspective

Hi. I think the modal verb "could" isn't correct with this example sentence with the present perfect, but should be the modal verb "can. Am I correct? Thank you for your help in advance.

They have tried everything but they can (not "could") help him.

Hi, thank you. I think the example sentence is incorrect.

He has seen her but (he) didn't say "hi" to her.

As to the example sentence I wrote initially, I am very sorry but it should be a negative; so the verb "can" should be "can't." Now does it still have different meaning depending on whether he is alive (as you said for the original one)? Thank you gain for your
