Present Perfect

Dear teachers,

Is the following sentence correct?

"Today, the composite price index of stocks has dived below 2,000 points for the first time in 10 years."

I think the sentence is wrong because of "Today."
I believe "Today" should be deleted or the tense should be changed to "past" tense.

What do you think of this?

Thanks and best regards,

David Kim

I understand your concern, but it is common and natural enough as an announcement of an event (= a 'life experience').
