present perfect

I have called you several times lately but you didn't bother to return my calls.

I do understand" have called" which means that I am still calling you or finished not a long time ago . We should use the progressive should n't we , but I don't get why bother is past simple because the person keeps on not returning the calls .

Native speakers need not be grammatically consistent if their viewpoint changes during a communication.

Now why "have called" and not the progressive because it is still continuing ,is it because it is written several which is a sort of enphasize
