Present perfect

I was here a few months ago during the summer, and made a lot of new friends. We('ve) kept in touch, so that's why I'm back here visiting them.

Should it be present perfect or past tense? And are my sentences very basic and elementary writing? Do adult native speakers actually write like I do?

Although, I'm not a native speaker, and can't really comment on the last question you posed in your post above, I'm taking a stab at this. "We have kept in touch" seems more appropriate to me in this context. Moreover, the sentence you wrote above is quite OK.

"We have kept in touch" seems more appropriate to me in this context. Moreover, the sentence you wrote above is quite OK. Using simple language is always good.

Both tenses are possible but, for speakers of BrE at least, the present perfect is more likely
