present participle or gerund

Hi

Please tell me if this is a gerund or present participle.

His tattered coat needs mending.

I think it is gerund, for it is the object of the verb needs.

I must contain the excitement which at times I feel while posting questions or answering questions. It takes away my concentration.

In my dictionary "mending" is straightforwardly classified as a noun.
