Present participle making

How we make present participle forms by adding "ing"? Is there any rule?

1. Run-- Running ( we doubbled the consonant "n" in the participle because there is vowel before it.

But, "know" its participle is knowing. We dont double the consonent "W", even though there is a vowel before the letter "W".

So can you explain this ?
