Present participle (chess)

Hi.
Then Black must stake a bigger claim in the center and advance either his c5- or c6-pawn, challenging White's central position and striking out for still more space.

Why does the author use present participle here?what does he mean?

Thanks in advance

You mean the author of the page I linked to? No, I've no idea, beyond what it says at the bottom of the page. By the way, "Robin" can be either a man's name or a woman's name.
