Hi forsubhi; I can see that you are confused, so I'll attempt a good clear explanation. English has a set of verb forms called the "progressive" or "continuous". A verb in this form usually shows an action that lasts for an indefinite period of time.

Hi forsubhi;

I can see that you are confused, so I'll attempt a good clear explanation.

English has a set of verb forms called the "progressive" or "continuous".
A verb in this form usually shows an action that lasts for an indefinite period of time.
The progressive tenses all use the present participle of the main verb with an inflected form of the verb "be."

Hi. Present participle is the ing form of a verb which has four major funtions.1 as a main verb showing action but in progressive tenses only 2 as a noun called it gerund. 3 as an adjective modifying a noun and as an adverb modifying a verb.

E.g.
1: Students are laughing. Laughing as a main verb
2: Laughing decreases depresion. Laughing as a gerund

That is the general misconception. The " ing" form of a verb in this construction is functions as a present participle. The progressive form is only true when the "ing" verb is paired up with any form of the "be" verb", i.e. The baby is sleeping.

There is no doubt in my mind that your academic linguistic depth is beyond most of us who frequent the forum. Unless one has plan to become a linguist, I think the "labeling" for each part of the speech as your pointed out are academic, which to me may not help the learners at their level. In the sentence: Mary ran out of the kitchen, whether she was "petrified","scared" or "screaming" , as

Certainly present participle can funtion as an adverb modifying a verb. Furthermore, it is the reduction of an adverb clause to adverb and you know better that adverb modifies a verb.

E.g. Ali fell down playing. Ali fell down while he was playing.

In the above sentence'' while he was playing'' is an adverb clause reduced to an adverb. Therefor, present participle ca

Hi
Listen! Past Participle form of a verb or third form of a verb never funtions as an adverb but as modifier and present participle can function both as modifier and adverb or verb modifier.

Hope it is clear now.
