Present or perfect participle instead of an adverbial clause of reason.

Dear teachers,

would you please have a look at the following sentences that I wanted to combine using a participle construction:

Three-year-old Kevin found the front door open. He saw no sign of his mother. So he decided to leave the house.

a) Finding the front door open and seeing no sign of his mother, three-year-old Kevin decided...

All actions mentioned here take place at the same 'moment'. So I think that the present participle fits well here.

But what about

b) Having found the front door open and having seen no sign....

c) Having found the front door open and seeing no sign....

d) After finding....

I don't think that these constructions are correct here since they imply a longer distance between events 1 and 2 on the one hand, and 3 on the other. Or are they fine enough?

Thank you very much for having a look at my question!

Top answer

a) Finding the front door open and seeing no sign of his mother, three-year-old Kevin decided to leave the house. This is OK, though I would personally put a comma after "open". b) Having found the front door open and having seen no sign of his mother, three-year-old Kevin decided to leave the house.

  • a) Finding the front door open and seeing no sign of his mother, three-year-old Kevin decided to leave the house.

  • b) Having found the front door open and having seen no sign of his mother, three-year-old Kevin decided to leave the house.
  • Makes sense, but stylistically clunky.
  • c) Having found the front door open and seeing no sign of his mother, three-year-old Kevin decided to leave the house.
