Present or past tense

Example:

I almost lost because of the market crash, so I thought it best to take a vacation and then come back when things begin/began to look up again.

Which one would be right - begin or began?I feel it is begin, but I want to be sure.

Shamin

I feel it is begin, but I want to be sure. Actually. 'began' is the more usual native choice, I think, regressed to match ''thought'.
