Present OR past tense

In this sentence, should I use present tense or past tense?

" I'm sorry, I forget / forgot to bring the book. "

Top answer

Past tense, because the act of forgetting is deemed to have happened in the past (at the time you should have picked it up). Contrast with "I forget how to do this", said while you're trying to do something, where the act of forgetting is happening now.
