Present or past

How many relationships have you had/did you have/had you had before this one (implying that person is in a relationship at the moment of speaking)?

Can "before this one" be replaced with "until now" thus vindicating the use of the present perfect, or does it refer to the moment when this new relationship began (which is obviously in the past)?
