Present or Past

Hi teachers,

This a part of a narrative story.

Eva: Twenty-four hours ago he escaped from prison, and our new president wants him back in

prison -today! Now! At once!

Which is the right question?

a) When does their new president want him back in prison?

b) When did their new president want him in prison?

I know the story is in present, but the conversation took place in the past.

That's why I have the doubt.

Thanks in advance

The text says:

The Chief of Police looked at the Inspector coldly and said, "Three months ago this man - Alex Dinon- killed the President of our country. He's a murderer - a dangerous man. Twenty- four hours ago he escaped from prison and our new president wants him back in prison - today! Now! At once!"

And your question is how to ask, as, for example, in a classroom situation where you are the teacher, when the president wants or wanted the prisoner to be returned to prison.

You can ask that either way.

1. From the viewpoint of you and your students looking at the story as a text present before you, as if it were an object like a box of chocolate or a toaster oven.
