Present or Past

Hi teachers,

Which one is correct according to the answer?

a) Why did Alex know the men were not fat away?

b) Why did Alex know the men are not fat away?

Because he could hear their feet on the ground.

I guess 'a' is correct because 'did' only affects the verb 'know'. The verb 'were' is not afected by 'did' because this verb doesn't need an auxiliary to form the pass, it can stand alone. Am I right?

Thanks in advance

Do you mean 'far'? Your conclusion is completely wrong; it has nothing to do with auxiliary vs main verbs. Both A and B are possible, with A more likely.

  • If this is a question about a narrative, however, the write may well choose B, since the story itself is timeless.
