Present continuous tense expressing future action

1) I am going to meet you soon.

2) I am meeting you soon.

What is the differences between #1 and 2 ? It seems to me that both express the near future action. How do I know which one I should use and in what context?

Thanks

The first indicates an intention or a personal plan; the second indicates a set schedule, often imposed by an outside authority. Nevertheless, native speakers pay little attention to this sort of analysis, and either will usually work.
