Present continuous

Please clarify this doubt:

Mr. A works between 9-5.

At 8:00 Pm. Mr. A received a call from his manager and asked about his project.

He replied that "I am working on that project Sir".

Why he used present continuous as he is not working at that time.


If the statement above is true why cant we use "I am living in new York" rather than "I live in new York".
