Present and Past in one sentence

Many times I was confused about using 2 different tenses in one sentence. Is it possible?
For example:
John was my boss, and is my close friend.

I want to talk about my boss (in the past) and he is also my friend (until now). Is this correct?

John was my boss and is my close friend.

Fine, but no comma.

I ate sushi yesterday, am eating sushi today, and will eat sushi tomorrow. (Commas because it is a series.)

This Brit would use a comma there.

Hmmm. American practice is no comma with and unless a new subject appears explicitly: John was my boss, and he is my close friend.
