Hi !
I have a question and here is a part of script.
A : I got your poster board right here. So , pretend you're telling the story of his life to someone who has never heard of him. What do you put on that board?
B : well ......
My question is why use "what do you put ..."not "what will you put ...." present verb represents future ???
Thank you ![]()
We use " will " if it is a question that has a response for this one particular situation. Suppose Kim owns a restaurant. Mai is the cook.

We use "will" if it is a question that has a response for this one particular situation.
Suppose Kim owns a restaurant. Mai is the cook. She makes special dishes for lunch. Every day there is a different special. Sometimes Mai surprises Kim in the morning when they are preparing to open the restaurant for lunch.
Kim: " Mai, here's the poster board for the lunch menu. What
wskawhy use "what do you put ..."not "what will you put ....
I think it is said in a sort of dramatic, also called 'narrative', present tense.
General situation means it might be possible to occur as usal ?
But my question' s situation is one episode....
wskaSo , pretend you're telling the story
This is a hypothetical situation, because of "pretend." It is not a real situation, but imaginary.
The real situation can happen any time in the future. It is not specifically right now.
May I ask one more question?
Sometimes when I saw movie or drama , I feel using present verb interrogative sentence represents future..for example (what do we do( the next) ? Like this .... (I know present verb uses when things in general )..
It's often making me confusing...
Thank you..
wskaSometimes when I see a movie or drama , I feel using a present tense verb in an interrogative sentence represents future.
Simple present tense does not always mean present time.
For example:
1. Water freezes at 0º C.
It expresses something that is true in the past, the present and future times.
2.
My example question is just common and these are not many ? So I think it as just phrase.. ?( "What do we do now ")
Thank you.
wska"What do we do now?"
It's a very common thing to say when you don't know what to do.
