Prepositions + ing form

Uo until now I've been learning that prepositions require the ing form; now I've came across these 2 sentences and I don't understand why the infinitive is correct after 'but'.Could someone enlighten me on this matter?

They are doing nothing but bumming around.
They do nothing but complain.

The verb form following 'but' (which is not a preposition but a conjunction) tends to parallel the preceding main verb: They are doing nothing but complaining . They do nothing but complain .
