Prepositions: from/in the box

(1) Could you please get me an eraser from the white box?

(2) Could you please get me an eraser in the white box?

Some of my non-native English speaking friends think "from" is correct because the eraser comes from the box. My other friends think "in" is the better choice because the eraser is sitting in there.

Which preposition is correct? Thank you very much.

You can ask for the eraser in the white box if you want that one and no other.
