Prepositions for list of categories?

Hi. Let us pretend that you have a list of unrelated words like "button," "white board" and "handle", and want to have your students put them under a category such as "on a jacket" or "in school" (in a school?).

Which ones could be correct as categories?

in a boat/on a boat

in school/in a school

in a car/on a car

Top answer

The only one that seems odd or rarely used is 'on a car' unless it refers to a train car.
