Prepositions Confusing

Hi there. I am studying prepositions. I know the description of each one, but, i saw there a some cases that doesn't have a MASTER rule to apply, so, it is so confusion for non native speakers to decide which preposition to use.

Example:

On the newspaper / In the newspaper
Lie in bed / On the couch
Movies in a theater / Movies on TV
On vacations / In vacations

So. For these kind of situation, i do not have a PLACE or a TIME to indicate, it is just a situation, or a condition, so. Is there a MASTER rule that can help me to decide about any case i found about "correct use of prepositions"
