Prepositions

Hello!

I'm bit confused about prepositiont.

That's how I understend it:

We use "at" when we talk about specific place (theater, home, etc)

We use "on" when we talk about surface (on the table, on TV, etc)

We use "in" when we talk about place in general (country, city, state, etc) or when we talk about space with limits (box, buiding, when we want to show that we are inside the building)

But...

I don't understand:

I live on\at the fifth floor of my apartament building (I want to use at because it specific place, but correct answer is "on")

I met him on\in the street (I want to use "on" but "in" is correct answer, why "in" is correct?)

He has a lot of beatiful pictures on\in the wall (I use "on" but correct is "in"

Thank you.

Top answer

I live on the fifth floor of my apartment building. It's always 'on the Xth floor' of a building. There is no general rule except that a floor is, I suppose, a surface.

  • I live on the fifth floor of my apartment building.
  • It's always 'on the Xth floor' of a building.
  • There is no general rule except that a floor is, I suppose, a surface.
  • You just have to remember this one.
  • I met him on\in the street.

For most of these, you need to memorize the correct combinations.

on an island; on a farm; see something in a picture.

At\In the of the street ??? Something is wrong here. You didn't write this correctly.
