Hi,

I was writing an e-mail to one of my friends and when it came to making a sentence including this topic, unfortunately I got stuck again. Afterwards I looked back at this thread to realize this:

These two seemed exactly the same to me. why is one necessary while the other one is wrong? Is it because of "like" ? How should the whole sentence be? (The second one)

And the sentences I was trying to make is:

"He looked so brutal. That was what I'd been thinking (of) during the match." Does it make sense? If not, could you please correct this sentence too?

To think of something means roughly do conceive of something, to have the idea enter your mind.

eg Yesterday, when I saw a beautiful rose, I thought of Mary.

The question above seems to nbe asking if the idea enetered my mind. That's why 'of' is needed in the answer.

To think something means to have that opinion, to have that idea. in your mind

That's what the question below seems to focus on. That's why 'of' is wrong.
