Prepositions

Hi,
Is there any specific reason(s) for using these different prepositions when describing, e.g. the table is by/near/next to the bed? Does one mean closer to the others?

thanks,

Ryan

Basically, all three words mean the same. This is just my personal opinion: "By" and "next to" would seem to be a little closer than "near."
