Most of the grammar sites I visit tend to talk about using participial phrases only as adjectives, and I find it odd that constructions like this, despite being quite common, aren't really addressed (at least not in anything I could find). So thank you for clearing that up for me.

The way I look at it, only those participle clauses that are used like relative clauses are adjectival, and these are most likely in the minority. The majority are supplemental in nature (some people call them 'adverbial' but that's not necessarily a very accurate description); that is, they contain a secondary predicate for the subject of the sentence they are attached to.
