Prepositional phrase functioning adverbially or adjectivally?

With a reasonable understanding in the subject, I am very interested in Nutrition.

Immediately when I read this, I relate the prepositional phrase to the predicate. So I see this as a prepositional phrase functioning adverbially, saying why I am interested.

1) But should I change this to the following if I don't want it to appear adverbially, but rather if I want it to appear more as a trait of the subject?

I am very interested in Nutrition, and have a reasonable understanding in the subject due to self-learning.

2) If I want it to be adjectival and not at all adverbial, would you agree that it is best to avoid placing it before the subject as done in the original above?
