Prepositional phrase

"You make new friends on this website and have discussions on various topics. It's just like in school."

Why do we say "just like in school", rather than "just like school", when "in school" is adverbial in nature, and we are comparing "it" with "the school" ?

Top answer

It is just as alternative syntax for expressing the thought: You make new friends on this website and have discussions on various topics. It's just like [we do] in school.
