Prepositional Phrase

Those who have visited the Grand Canyon have typically seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, with different colors that mark the passage of time like the rings in a tree trunk.

The above sentence doesn't sound so good . My understanding is that prep phrase can act as adverbial(modifying verb) or adjectival (modifying subject)....but above prep phrase doesn't fit both the cases; what does this phrase modify??

Can someone please clarify?
