Grammar

preposition with islands

do you say "living ON (name of island) or IN (name of island)"??

Top answer

You live on an island, not in one. However, Sicily is an island, but you would say I live in Sicily. If the word Island is part of the name, you would probably use on : living on Long Island.

Hi,

Very broadly speaking, both are possible.

on suggests the speaker is thinking of it as an island. eg on Oahu

in suggests the speaker iis thinking of it as just a place. eg in Tasmania
