Preposition usage...Can we use preposition 'for' before a destination

I want to confirm my doubts abt the use of the above mentioned preposition.

Hi, It depends on the rest of the sentence. eg You can say 'He left for London yesterday'. but you can't say 'He went for London yesterday'.

It depends on the rest of the sentence.

eg You can say 'He left for London yesterday'.

but you can't say 'He went for London yesterday'.
