Preposition Question

As Antarctic glaciers collapse ---- the sea, scientists struggle to find out what that means ---- the rise of sea levels.

A) against / in
B) over / to
C) around / along
D) on / for
E) from / behind

Yet another question taken from notorious YDS Test. B and D are thought to be POSSIBLE ANSWERS. I'd like to hear what you can say about these possibilities. Please watch out, this Test is prepared by a state, publicly-funded organisation. Emotion: smile And there are many looking for a plausible explanation for the "impossibility" of OVER in this context.Emotion: stick out tongue

Well, the Scientific American writers are not necessarily grammar purists. Glaciers flow toward the sea and then collapse into it.

Any "in the direction of" expression would be understandable, at least. Emotion: smile
