Preposition problem

The branches are rubbing against/ rubbing the roof.

He hit his glass on/ against the table.

Which one is correct in either pair?

1. "Rubbing against" is correct. "Rubbing the roof" is not right. The verb "rubbing" would usually indicate a human or animal is doing the rubbing.


2. Both can be okay, but the meaning is slightly different with each. "On" would usually indicate a deliberate hitting of the table with his glass ("He hit his glass on the table hard to draw the inattentive waiter's attention.").
