PREPOSITION OR ADVERB?

Is 'underneath' in this sentence a preposition or an adverb?
"There was a deadly growl from underneath the bed"?
Does the phrase 'from underneath the bed' also act as an adverb in its entirity?

May I add my two cents' worth to everlastinghope's excellent answer?

I have checked my books (as we non-experts must do before posting) and I have found that "from underneath" may be

parsed (analyzed) as a so-called "phrasal preposition."

If I understand one of my favorite books, it may be a case of ellipsi
