Preposition - On or In

Which one is correct:

"Debbie lies on the street." or "Debbie lies in the street."

I think the both are correct. One is BrE and the other is AmE. I am used to saying in the street.

Not sure about BrE, but "in" is definitely AmE.

If it refers to a person, I would say "Debbie is lying in the street".

I don't like the verb tense in the sentences. Surely Debbie doesn't lie in or on the street regularly. The present continuous would be more appropriate.

In the sentence, the use of the word 'in' would suggest that she is lying in a spot near the middle of the road rather than near the side of the road. 'In' would be the most likely choice if Debbie was hit by a car while crossin

BrE - British English

AmE - American English

In the US (AmE) if you say someone is "in" the street, it means where the car are. If you say someone is "on" the street, they are along the road. However, "in the street" is used in BrE as "on the street" is used in AmE. Mostly.
