Preposition? (information on vs. about)

Hello,

To describe a feature of an information system (that includes accounting and other tools), which preposition is better here, on or about?

a) • additional information on business partners
b) • additional information about business partners

From what I've read it seems about is more general and less formal than on. Is that right or does the difference consist in anything else, if I may ask?

This sounds somewhat plausible, though I doubt these distinctions are widely observed.
