In the following sentence, do we really need to say 'in'?
The sentence makes sense without it.

'Tony looking a bit uncomfortable in between the US ambassador and his husband.'

However, what you have written is not a complete sentence. Perhaps you meant "is/was looking". Also, something has gone wrong at the end with "his husband".

Thanks GPY. This was a clip from a newspaper. I saw the sentence and knew it wasn't correct.

The husband is correct. It's a gay couple.

Yes it was. It was actually our Prime Minister who was standing between a newly married gay couple. This is a huge debate in Australia right now. Even though it was a caption, I thought it was too long. That's another good question.
