Preposition 'in'

Hi teachers,

Does the preposition 'in' in the following sentence mean 'with intent to do something'?

e.g.
-----
The officer held onto the windshield wipers of the bus in attempt to detain the driver.

What role does the preposition 'in' play here? To me, it implies the cause/purpose of action of the subject.
any other example of the preposition 'in' with similar use?

Thanks in advance,
