Preposition: go [onto/into]

I've heard that you say:

(1) People get on a bus.

I'm not sure if I can use "go into" a bus in the following sentence.

(2) Some policemen went into a bus to look for the suspect.

Some of my non-native English speaking friends think "on" is always used for "buses". Which preposition is correct? Please help me. Thank you.
