preposition (expect of)

1. Spanking or hitting children will get their attention, but it doesn't teach children what is expected of them or how to behave in the future.

I was wondering where "of" after expected comes from. So I look up expect in my dictionary. It states this.
~ sth (of/from sb) . And example sentences are these.

2. Her parents expected high standards from her.
3. Are you clear what is expected of you?

Q2) In #3, if we say the person who expects of you is "I," can I say rephrase #3 in active voice like this?
Are you clear what I expect of you?

Q3) Likewise, can I change it to like this?

Spanking or hitting children will get their attention, but it doesn't teach children what it expects of them or how to behave in the future.

1. "expect X of Y" is just a set pattern.

2. Yes.

3. No, because "it" would refer to "spanking or hitting children", and it is not possible for an activity to "expect". Only people (or intelligent animate beings) can expect.
