Preposition?

There are a couple of birds on the tree.

In the sentence, can I use 'on' before the tree? Thanks in advance.

Top answer

Ordinarily it's "in". I suppose "on" is possible if, for example, it is a fallen tree.

You can use "on" or "in", depending on whether you perceive the birds to be perched "on top of" the tree or "within" the tree. My feeling is that "in" would be more common.
