preposition

If I pick up a pencil, raise my hand holding it with two fingers, and ask "Where is the pencil?" showing it to others, what do they answer it? Is it 'in my hand' or 'on my hand'?

Top answer

Dear Lucas, They would "in" because your hand is acting like a container enclosing the pencil. If you had put the pencil on the flat palm of your hand (a surface), we would have said "on". Kind regards, Michael
