Why can't we place the preposition before 'ing form'?

No, I do not have an example of such sort. I was simply making sure about what I have been told of.

Well, it doesn't seem hard to think of counterexamples:

I apologise for being rude.
I'm not frightened of dying.
You lose weight by eating less.
etc. etc.

I'm not sure whether what you were told was wrong, or whether it was supposed to apply to a different kind of grammatical situation.

The rule is that all prepositions are followed by the gerund, in other words the ing form.

But I guess there are other uses of the "-ing" form that can't be preceded by a preposition. I thought the question might be about those uses, but I cannot think of a situation where there is likely to be doubt.
