Preposition

Could you please tell me what prepositions I should use in my sentence:

1. ask for password for each server operation
2. ask for password each server operation
3. ask password each server operation
4. ask password for each server operation

I think preposition is one of the most difficult subject in a foreign language. And I have no idea how to structure knowledge about it. Every new case confuses me =\

Thanks in advance

Ask for a password for each server operation. "Ask for" is a phrasal verb meaning "request", so the "for" is indispensable. A password is said to be "for" a thing, so you need that one, too.

  • A password is said to be "for" a thing, so you need that one, too.
  • The article "a" before "password" is required in standard English, but such articles are often dispensed with in the telegraphic style you sometimes see in technical language or in lists of instructions.
  • Context would determine whether to use the article.
