Preposition

"A covered wagon with two oxen yoked was slowly going in the steppe."

Does it sound alright? Or how should I remake it? What preposition should I use with the word "steppe" in this case? (steppe is a plain overgrown with short grass in Russia, Kazakhstan etc.)

If a steppe is like a plain, it is likely more appropriate to use "across," "on to," or "through."

"A covered wagon with two oxen yoked was slowly going across the steppe."

A covered wagon was being slowly pulled across the steppe by yoked oxen.
