Preposition

I couldn't say hello to you earlier on because I was so tied up.

I wonder what role the preposition on plays here.
Without on does it mean different?

No difference in meaning, but I think the use isn't quite natural here.

I was on the phone all afternoon, but earlier on, I was free. [It seems to need a point of reference.]
