Preposition

Sir,

I have read in a grammar book such as

Some words can bea preposition or an adverb.But one difference is that -------

1. Preposition govern the nouns or pronouns.

What is meaning govern here . How does it govern the noun?


2.But the same word ,if does not goven the noun then it is an adveb.

Please, explain the meaning of both the lines.
