Preparing or in preparation?

Hello,

Could you tell me please which of these two sentences is better?

1.He was washing his car yesterday morning preparing for their departure.

2.He was washing his car yesterday morning in preparation for their departure.

Can I use 'while' before 'preparing' in both sentences?

Thanks
